When it comes to wildlife and nature photography, I feel that I do have a slight advantage…working as a Guide and a Biologist I am out in the field a lot. I learned a long time ago…never leave your camera behind! I have been guiding on the north coast for 14 years and in the winter months I have worked and traveled overseas as a biologist and a guide. Spending my entire working life in the outdoors has given me an advantage of knowing when and where to get the shots that I am striving to capture. After guiding in Mendocino for a couple of years, I migrated north to Humboldt so I could finish up a second degree in science...and I never left!

The only Photography class I have ever taken was in the 7th grade back in the 70's; Black and White Film. I also spent nearly a year as paid crew, on a Whale Research boat the r/v Rigina Maris taking hundreds of pictures of Whales and Dolphins. This really bumped up my skills. Try developing film on a 144 ft. Sailing ship, at sea, sometimes humdreds of miles off-shore! So I learned the 'Old' way, the hard way. Every thing digital I learned, was by trial and lots of error!

When Digital Photography came about, I was amazed at the possibilities. I used a little Point and Shoot digital for years, until January of 2007 when I upgraded my entire stockpile of camera equipment; it’s come a long way from the days of film cameras.

I am currently publishing a photography book on the Nature and Wildlife of the North Coast. You may also have seen some of my work published in the Times Standard, Eureka, where I work as a freelance photographer from time to time. (Publications)

I hope you enjoy my work, and hope you will enjoy my book when it is finally published.

Cheers,

Lowell Cottle
